What is Doxycycline?
Doxycycline containing the active ingredient doxycycline belongs to a type of medications called tetracycline antibiotics. The medication is mainly prescribed to treat bacterial infections. It works by interfering with the bacteria's ability to produce proteins that are essential to them. Without these proteins the bacteria cannot grow, multiply and increase in numbers which stops the spread of the infection and the remaining bacteria will be killed by the immune system.
How is Doxycycline used?
Doxycycline is usually taken 1 to 2 times per day or as directed by a doctor. The tablets work best taken on an empty stomach, at last 1 hour prior to or 2 hours after a meal and should be taken with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient's condition and their response to the therapy. Do not discontinue the medication until the prescribed amount is completed, even if symptoms have fully healed, as abruptly stopping the medication can cause the acne to return and the bacteria becoming immune to antibiotics.
