What is Duprost?
Duprost containing the active ingredient dutasteride belongs to a class of medications called 5 alpha reductase inhibitors. The medication works by preventing the conversion of the hormone testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the prostate. It can be used alone or with other medications to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) such as acute urinary retention, a weak stream and the need to urinate frequently or urgently. It may also decrease the risk of needing prostate surgery in the future.
How is Duprost used?
Duprost is usually taken orally once per day or as directed by a doctor. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient's condition and their response to the therapy. The capsules should be taken whole and not opened, chewed or crushed. Do not discontinue the treatment without consulting a doctor as it may take between 3 to 6 months before the full benefits of the drug is felt.
Adverse effects
Patients using Duprost may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Erectile dysfunction
- Decreased sex drive or performance
- Problems with ejaculation
- Breast tenderness or enlargement
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persists or worsen.
Warnings
The drug can be absorbed through the skin and can harm an unborn baby, the capsules should not be handled by any pregnant women.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Duprost is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
