What is Dutas?
Dutas works by preventing the conversion of the hormone testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. The active ingredient dutasteride is classified as a 5 alpha reductase inhibitor type of medication. The capsules can be used alone or in combination with other medications to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) such as the need to urinate frequently or urgently, a weak stream or acute urinary retention. It may also decrease the risk of needing prostate surgery in the future.
How is Dutas used?
Dutas should generally be taken as directed by a doctor, usually once per day. The mediation can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct length of treatment and dosage as it will depend on the patient's condition and their response to the therapy. The capsules should be taken whole and not crushed, chewed or opened before consumption. Do not discontinue the treatment without consulting a doctor as it may take between 3 to 6 months before the full benefits of the treatment is felt.
Adverse effects
Dutas may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Breast tenderness or enlargement
- Problems with ejaculation
- Decreased sex drive or performance
- Erectile dysfunction
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
The drug can be absorbed through the skin and can harm an unborn baby, the capsules should not be handled by any pregnant women.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Dutas is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
