What is E-mycin?
E-mycin is a broad spectrum macrolide antibiotic that slows the growth of bacteria in the body. It stops bacteria from multiplying by reducing the protein that bacteria need for growth and allowing the immune system to kill off the weakened bacteria. It can be an alternative to penicillin for patients allergic to penicillin. It is used to treat bacterial infections such as bronchitis, pneumonia, whooping cough, acne, mouth, ear, intestine, lung, urinary tract and skin infections. It cannot be used to treat viral infections such as the common cold or flu.
How is E-mycin used?
E-mycin is usually taken orally 3 to 4 times a day for a period of 7 to 21 days depending on the patient’s condition. The medication should be taken whole and not chewed, split or crushed. It is not recommended to take more or less of the medication as prescribed as it may have adverse effects, contact a doctor for the correct dosage. To prevent an upset stomach it is recommended to take the medication along with a meal or a glass of milk. As with all antibiotics, patient should complete the full cycle prescribed by a doctor as stopping the medication may allow the bacteria to come back and become resistant to the antibiotic.
Adverse effects
E-mycin may cause side effects such as:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Headache
- Diarrhea
- Stomach pain
- Loss of appetite
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Jaundice
- Hearing problems
- Dark urine
Irregular heartbeat
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
E-mycin is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
