What is Ebixa?
Ebixa works by blocking the action of certain substances in the brain that is linked to symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. The active ingredient memantine is considered a NMDA receptor antagonist type of medication. It can be used to improve awareness, memory and the ability to perform daily functions in patients diagnosed with moderate to severe dementia of the Alzheimer’s type.
How is Ebixa used?
Ebixa should be taken 1 to 2 times per day or as directed by your doctor. The tablets can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. To reduce the chance of side effects, the dosage may be gradually increased to the correct dosage.
Adverse effects
Ebixa may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Urinating more than usual
- Joint pain
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Headaches
- Constipation
- Dizziness
- Body aches
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Hypertension
- Hallucinations
- Lack of coordination
- Fainting
- Seizures
- Irregular heartbeat
- Chest pain
- Difficulty breathing
Warnings
The medication can help slow down the progression of the symptoms but cannot be used as a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Ebixa is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
