What is Emla Cream?
Emla Cream containing the 2 active ingredients lignocaine and prilocaine is considered a local anesthetic type of medication. It works by blocking the nerve signals in the body and numbs the area around the application site. The cream can be used to prevent or lessen pain before certain procedures such as inserting a medical instrument, skin grafts, minor skin surgery or the removal of localized lesions (genital warts).

How is Emla Cream used?
Emla Cream should only be applied topically to normal unbroken skin or the genital area and not to broken, irritated skin or open wounds unless directed by a doctor. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of time the medication needs to stay on the skin as it will depend on the type of condition being treated and the patient’s response to the treatment. Wash hands immediately after use unless the area being treated is on the hands and avoid getting the product in the eyes, nose, ears or mouth. The area can remain numb for several hours after the procedure. Protect the area from the heat or cold and prevent from bumping, scratching or rubbing the area until feeling returns.

Adverse effects
Patients using Emla Cream may encounter unwanted side effects such as:

  • Redness or burning at application site
  • Change in skin color
  • Swelling of the skin
  • Mental or mood changes
  • Irregular heartbeats
  • Seizures or fainting

Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
