What is m-Enalapril?
m-Enalapril containing the active ingredient enalapril maleate is considered an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor type of medication. The medication works by decreasing certain chemicals in the brain which allows blood vessels to relax so blood flows more smoothly and the heart to pump blood more efficiently. The tablets can be used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) which can help decrease the risk of strokes, heart attacks and kidney problems. Some patients may also use it to treat congestive heart failure.
How is m-Enalapril used?
m-Enalapril is usually taken orally 1 to 2 times per day or as directed by a doctor. The tablets can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. To prevent side effects the doctor may start you on a small dose and increase the dosage gradually over several weeks. Do not discontinue the medication without consulting a doctor, even if you feel well, as hypertension usually has no visible symptoms.
Adverse effects
Patients using m-Enalapril may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Dry cough
- Abdominal pain
- Change in taste or appetite
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Blurred vision
- High potassium blood levels
- Fainting
- Sleeping problems
- Change in the amount of urine
- Jaundice
- Signs of infection
- Excessive fatigue or weakness
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
m-Enalapril is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
