What is Estrofem?
Estrofem can be used to treat symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes, vaginal burning, dryness and irritation. The active ingredient oestradiol is a form of estrogen, a female sex hormone produced by the ovaries. The medication can be used as a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in women who show signs and symptoms of oestrogen deficiency or women who have had a hysterectomy. Some women may also use the tablets to treat postmenopausal osteoporosis (bone loss).
How is Estrofem used?
Estrofem should be used as directed by a doctor, usually once per day. The medication should be taken with a full glass of water but can be taken with or without food. Contact a doctor for the correct length of treatment and dosage as it will depend on the condition of the patient and their reaction to the treatment.
Adverse effects
Estrofem may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Weight changes
- Breast tenderness
- Headaches
- Bloating
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Stomach pain
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Insomnia
- Decreased sex drive
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Fainting
- Jaundice
- Unusual vaginal bleeding or discharge
- Breast lumps
- Mental or mood changes
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Estrofem is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
