What is Ezetrol?
Ezetrol containing the active ingredient ezetimibe is considered a cholesterol absorption inhibitor. The medication works by preventing cholesterol from being absorbed from the small intestines into the bloodstream. It can be used alone or along with an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor or statins type of medication to treat high cholesterol which can help prevent strokes and heart attacks.
How is Ezetrol used?
Ezetrol is usually taken orally once per day or as directed by a doctor. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a drink of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. If the patient also requires taking a bile acid sequestrant, it should be taken 2 hours before or 4 hours after taking the bile acid sequestrant.
Adverse effects
Patients using Ezetrol may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Diarrhea
- Stomach pain
- Excess gas
- Excessive fatigue
- Runny or stuffy nose
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Jaundice
- Signs of liver problems
- Chest pain
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Back or joint pain
- Unusual muscle weakness
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Ezetrol is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
