What is Finast?
Finast containing the active ingredient finasteride is considered a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor type of medication. The 5mg tablet is used by patients to help treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It works by decreasing the amount of the natural body hormone (DHT) that cause the growth of the prostate to help treat conditions such as frequent or difficult urination and may reduce the chance of acute urinary retention. In different dosage, some patients may also use the medication to treat male pattern baldness or hormone replacement therapy.
How is Finast used?
Finast is usually taken once per day or as directed by a doctor. The tablets can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the condition of the patient and their response to the medication. The tablet should be taken whole and not bit, chewed or crushed as it may cause a sore throat or mouth.
Adverse effects
Patients using Finast may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Breast enlargement, tenderness, swelling or discharge
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Decreased volume of ejaculation
- Decreased sex drive or performance
- Erectile dysfunction
- Testicle pain
- Depression
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
The medication should not be used or handled by women as it can lead to potentially fatal reactions to an unborn child.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Finast is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
