What is Flagyl?
Flagyl containing the active ingredient metronidazole is considered a nitroimidazole antibiotic type of medication. The medication can treat and prevent the growth of bacteria and protozoa in the body. It can be used to treat bacterial infections in the reproductive system, gastrointestinal tract, skin, joints and respiratory tract. The tablets cannot be used in the treatment of viral infections such as the common cold or flu.
How is Flagyl used?
Flagyl is usually taken orally 2 to 3 times per day or as directed by a doctor. To prevent an upset stomach, the tablets should be taken with some food along with a glass of water or milk. Contact a doctor for correct length of treatment and dosage as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the medication. Do not discontinue the medication without completing the full prescribed amount as abruptly stopping the medication may allow a relapse of the infection and become resistant to the antibiotic.
Adverse effects
Patients using Flagyl may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Stomach pain
- Unpleasant taste in mouth
- Loss of appetite
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Mental or mood changes
- Numbness in hands or feet
- Painful urination
- Vision changes
- Seizures
- Dark colored urine
- Furry tongue or mouth irritation
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Flagyl is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
