What is Flixotide Inhale?
The Flixotide Inhaler consists of the active ingredient fluticasone propionate and is considered a corticosteroid type of medication. The medication when inhaled into the lungs can reduce inflammation and excess mucus formation to allow easier breathing for the patient. The inhaler should be administered regularly as a preventative for asthma attacks. Some people may also use the drug to treat chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and emphysema.
How is Flixotide Inhale used?
The Flixotide Inhaler is usually used 2 times daily or as instructed by a doctor. The dosage will depend on the condition of the patient and their reaction to the medication, contact a doctor for the correct dosage. Prior to the initial dose or if the inhaler has not been used in over 7 days, the inhaler will need to be primed before using. To prime the inhaler, direct the nozzle away from the face and apply 4 test sprays. Shake the inhaler well before administering the spray. To administer the spray, place the mouthpiece in your mouth, close your lips, push down on the canister, inhale deeply and hold for 10 seconds before exhaling. If the patient requires additional doses it is recommended to wait at least 30 seconds before applying the second dose.
Adverse effects
Flixotide Inhaler may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Oral thrush
- Acne
- Difficulty speaking
- Painful white patches in mouth
- Headaches
- Dry mouth
- Hoarseness
- Throat irritation
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Mental or mood changes
- Sudden worsening of symptoms
- Signs of infection
- Easy bruising or bleeding
- Muscle weakness
- Vision problems
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
Warnings
Keep count of the doses administered as the inhaler will need to be replaced after 120 doses. It is recommended to rinse your mouth with water immediately after administering the medication to prevent oral thrush or mouth and throat irritation. The medicine is also a preventative medication and cannot be used to treat an asthma attack.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Flixotide Inhale is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
