What is Flonida 5% Cream?
Flonida Cream works by interfering with the growth of skin cells to kill abnormal skin cells but will not harm normal cells. The active ingredient fluorouracil is considered an antimetabolites type of medication that destroys cancer cells and cells which may become cancerous. The cream is used in the treatment of a form of skin cancer called superficial basal cell carcinoma. Some people may also use the medication to treat solar or actinic keratoses, a skin condition where years of exposure to sunlight can cause scaly or crusted skin areas.
How is Flonida 5% Cream used?
Flonida Cream should only be applied topically as directed by a doctor, usually 1 to 2 times daily. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. Wash and dry your hands and the affected area before applying any of the cream. Spread a thin layer of the medication to the affected skin area with your fingertips and gently massage it in. Wash your hands immediately after applying the cream.
Adverse effects
Flonida Cream may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Eye irritation
- Skin discoloration
- Photosensitivity
- Swelling and inflammation of the skin
- Dry, flaking or peeling skin
- Irritation, burning or redness at application site
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
The cream should not be applied to the eyes, mouth, open cuts or broken skin as it may be absorbed in the bloodstream and could cause side effects.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Flonida 5% Cream is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
