What is Forxiga?
Forxiga (Dapagliflozin) is a diabetes medicine used to treat type 2 diabetes. Dapagliflozin is classed as a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. Best results will be achieved when Forxiga is taken along with a healthy diet and an exercise program.
Dapagliflozin is what is known as a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. SGLT2 is a protein that is responsible for re-absorption of glucose in the kidney. Taking Dapagliflozin works by inhibiting SGLT2, which decreases the amounts of sugar absorbed by the kidney and increases the amount of sugar that exits the body in the urine. This results is lower blood sugar levels.
How is Forxiga used?
Forxiga (Dapagliflozin) should be started at a dose of 5mg per day. Sometimes, people with more severe diabetes may require a 10mg daily dosage. Your doctor will perform blood tests before treatment and during treatment to ensure you are taking the correct dosage.
Forxiga (Dapagliflozin) can be taken with or without food. It is best to take the tablets in the morning.
Adverse effects
The most common side effects reported with Forxiga (Dapagliflozin) are a runny nose and/or sore throat. You may also experience dizziness and light-headedness. If you notice any other side effects, contact your doctor.
Warnings
Side effects reported when taking Dapagliflozin include dizziness, light-headedness, or fainting. By sitting up or standing slowly, these can be minimized. If you drink alcohol, become exposed to hot weather, exercise too hard, or have a fever these side effects may worsen. Do not drive or operate machinery until you have taken Dapagliflozin for long enough to discover how it affects you.

Dehydration can have a negative impact on Dapagliflozin and stop it from working properly. Maintain an adequate fluid intake while taking Forxiga. Contact your doctor if you have severe diarrhea or vomiting.
Regular blood tests may be needed throughout the course of treatment to ensure your blood sugar levels are normal.
