What is GTN Spray?
GTN Spray containing the active ingredient glyceryl trinitrate is considered a nitrate or vasodilator type of medication. The medication can help temporarily relax the blood vessels in the heart to allow the heart to pump blood easier and reduce the strain on the heart. It can be used in the treatment of angina (chest pain) in patients who have coronary artery disease. Some people may also use it before activities that may cause angina to prevent angina attacks.
How is GTN Spray used?
GTN Spray is usually used as needed, at the first sign of an angina attack or 5 to 10 minutes prior to activities that may cause an attack. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. Prior to using the spray for the first time, hold the container upright, point it away from yourself and press the button 10 times to prime the container. To apply the medication sit in an upright position, open your mouth and hold the container as close to your mouth as possible. Use your forefinger to press the button firmly to release the spray but do not inhale the spray. Close your mouth and do not spit the medication out or rinse your mouth for 5 to 10 minutes.
Adverse effects
Patients using GTN Spray may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Flushing
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Blurred vision
- Dry mouth
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Headaches
- Burning or stinging sensation in the mouth
- Fainting
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persists or worsen.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
GTN Spray is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
