What is Gabapin?
Gabapin works by changing the way the body senses pain and stabilizing electrical activity in the brain. The active ingredient gabapentin is considered an anticonvulsant or anti-epileptic type of medication. It can be used to relieve pain following a shingles attack or to control seizures in patients suffering from epilepsy. Some patients may also use the medication to treat restless legs syndrome.
How is Gabapin used?
Gabapin should be taken as directed by a doctor, usually 3 times per day. The medication should be taken with a full glass of water but can be taken with or without food. Dosage and length of treatment will depend on the patient's condition and their response to the therapy, contact a doctor for the correct dosage. The capsules should be taken whole and not chewed, crushed or opened. Do not discontinue the medication without consulting a doctor as abruptly stopping the treatment may cause severe withdrawal symptoms.
Adverse effects
Gabapin may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Fatigue
- Nausea
- Swollen hands or feet
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Headaches
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Vision problems or unwanted eye movements
- Strange or unusual thoughts
- Joint pain
- Mental or mood changes
- Difficulty swallowing or breathing
- Memory problems
- Increased seizures
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Gabapin is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
