What is Genticyn Eye Drop?
Genticyn Eye Drop containing the active ingredient gentamicin is considered an amoycoside antibiotics type of medication. The medication works by preventing the production of certain proteins necessary for bacteria to survive. It can be used to treat severe bacterial infections to the eye including conditions such as blepharitis and conjunctivitis as well as preventing infection after eye injury or surgery.
How is Genticyn Eye Drop used?
Genticyn Eye Drop is usually used every 4 to 8 hours or as directed by a doctor. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. Prior to applying the medication, make sure to wash and dry your hands thoroughly. To apply the eye drops, tilt the head back and pull down the bottom eyelid to form a pouch. Gently release 1 drop into the pouch and close your eyes for 2 to 3 minutes. Apply pressure to the inside corner of the eye with a finger to prevent the solution from draining. Repeat as needed for each eye but wait at least 5 minutes before instilling the next drop.
Adverse effects
Patients using Genticyn Eye Drops may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Irritation, burning or stinging of the eye
- Blurred vision
- Hearing loss
- Dizziness
- Trouble breathing or swallowing
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Genticyn Eye Drop is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
