What is Gestone?
Gestone containing the active ingredient progesterone is a man made version of the naturally occurring female sex hormone which is essential for the functioning of the female reproductive system. It is generally used to help early pregnancies to continue by women who have a history of unexplained miscarriages. The medication may also help a fertilized egg implant into the womb lining in women trying to get pregnant via in vitro fertilization (IVF). The ampoules also have the ability to regulate bleeding disorders of the uterus.
How is Gestone used?
Gestone is usually injected twice per week or as directed by a doctor. The ampoules are generally injected into a muscle as instructed by the doctor. Change the location of the injection each time to avoid problem areas in the muscle. Contact a doctor for the correct use, which days to use it, dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. The maximum frequency of injections should not exceed once per day.
Adverse effects
Women using Gestone may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Irritation at application site
- Breast tenderness
- Weight changes
- Changes in menstrual bleeding
- Migraines
- Fever
- Hair growth on face or hair loss from the scalp
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Mental or mood changes
- Jaundice
- Oedema
- Vision problems
- Swelling of the eye
- Sleep disturbances
Warnings
Patients with a history of breast cancer should check with their doctor whether the medication is suitable for them or not.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Gestone is not always suitable for all patients.
