What is Glucobay?
Glucobay containing the active ingredient acarbose is used along with a proper diet and exercise program to treat type 2 diabetes. It works by slowing the action of certain chemicals that break down food and release glucose in your blood. Controlling high blood sugar levels can help prevent vision problems, kidney damage, nerve problems and sexual function problems. Proper control of diabetes can also help decrease the risk of heart attacks or strokes.
How is Glucobay used?
Glucobay is usually taken orally 3 times per day or as directed by a doctor. It should be taken with the first bite of each main meal along with some water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. Your doctor may gradually increase your dosage to find the optimal dose for you. Continue to check your blood sugar levels regularly to monitor the effectiveness of the medication.
Adverse effects
Patients using Glucobay may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Diarrhea
- Excess gas
- Upset stomach
- Constipation
- Stomach pain
- Dizziness
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Confusion
- Seizures
- Loss of consciousness
- Extreme thirst or hunger
- Blurred vision
- Flatulence
- Jaundice
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Glucobay is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
