What is Glucobay?
Glucobay containing the active ingredient acarbose is considered an antidiabetic type of medication. The medication works by slowing down the digestion of carbohydrates in the body to help control blood sugar levels. It should be used along with a proper diet and exercise program to control high blood sugar levels in patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Proper maintenance of diabetes can help reduce the risk of heart attacks or strokes.
How is Glucobay used?
Glucobay is usually taken orally 3 times daily or as directed by a doctor. The medication should be taken with the first bite of a main meal along with a glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s weight, condition and response to the therapy. The recommended maximum dosage within a 24 hour span is 300mg.
Adverse effects
Patients using Glucobay may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Diarrhea
- Excess flatulence
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Jaundice
- Indigestion

Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Glucobay is not always suitable for all patients.
