What is Glyciphage?
Glyciphage works by increasing the body's response to insulin while decreasing the amount of glucose made by the liver and absorbed from food to control high blood sugar levels. The active ingredient metformin hydrochloride is considered an antidiabetic type of medication known as a biguanide. Controlling high blood sugar can help prevent sexual function problems, nerve problems, loss of limbs, kidney damage and vision problems. It is used by patients with type 2 diabetes to help decrease the risk of a stroke or heart attack.
How is Glyciphage used?
Glyciphage should be taken as directed by a doctor, usually 1 to 3 times daily. Take the tablets with a meal along with plenty of fluids while using the medication. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the condition of the patient and their reaction to the therapy. The doctor may prescribe a low initial dose, gradually increasing the dose to the optimal dosage to decrease the risk of side effects.
Adverse effects
Glyciphage may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Excess gas
- Metallic taste in mouth
- Headaches
- Weakness
- Diarrhea
- Upset stomach
- Vomiting
- Nausea
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Blurred vision
- Irregular heartbeat
- Hepatitis
- Trouble breathing
- Muslce pain
- Chest pain
Warnings
The medication is used to treat patients with type 2 diabetes and should not be used with patients diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Glyciphage is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
