What is Hepcvir?
Hepcvir (Sofosbuvir) 400mg is used in combination with other antiviral drugs to treat patients with viral infection that damages the liver (Hepatitis C) including those patients who have human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection or liver cancer or are awaiting a liver transplant. Sofobuvir is an antiviral drug that belongs to a class of medicines called nucleotide polymerase inhibitors. Hepcvir works by inhibiting an enzyme RNA polymerase which is essential for viral replication. This decreases the amount of Hepatitis C virus in the body thereby resulting in less liver damage and improved liver function.
How is Hepcvir used?
Hepcvir comes in a bottle of 28 x 400mg tablets.
A dosage of one tablet per day is generally prescribed, and treatment usually lasts for 12-24 weeks.
Each tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of water. Take the tablets with or without food, but take at the same time each day if possible.
Take only the dosage prescribed by your doctor. Do not stop taking Hepcvir until advised to do so by your docotr.
Adverse effects
Common side effects reported when taking Sofosbuvir are:
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Headaches
- Loss of appetite
- Lower back or side pain
- Insomnia
- Fever
These are generally mild and often decrease over time. Contact your doctor if they become a problem to you.
Some side effects indicate more serious problems. Contact your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:
- Pale skin
- Mental or mood changes
- Excessive fatigue
- Signs of new infection
- Changes in behavior
- Irregular heartbeat
- Trouble breathing
Warnings
Hepcvir can result in fetal damage if taken by pregnant women, or in pregnancies caused by men taking Hepcvir.
Some other medicines may interact with Hepcvir (Sofosbuvir). Tell your doctor of all medicines you are currently taking before beginning treatment with Sofosbuvir.
