What is Hiprex?
Hiprex containing the active ingredient hexamine or methenamine is considered an anti-infective antibiotics type of medication. The medication works by turning urine acidic and causing formaldehyde to be released to kill bacteria present in the urinary tract. It can be used to prevent or control urinary tract infections caused by certain bacteria but cannot be used to treat an active infection.
How is Hiprex used?
Hiprex is usually taken orally 2 to 4 times per day or as directed by a doctor. To reduce the risk of an upset stomach, it is advised to take the medication with some food along with a glass of water. It works better when the urine is acidic, ask your doctor for ways to increase urine acidity. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. Do not discontinue the medication without completing the prescribed amount, even if symptoms have disappeared as abruptly stopping the treatment may cause a relapse in the condition and the bacteria to become immune to antibiotics.
Adverse effects
Patients using Hiprex may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Stomach cramps
- Upset stomach
- Loss of appetite
- Bloody urine
- Increasingly painful or difficult urination
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
