What is Imatib?
Imatib containing the active ingredient imatinib mesylate is an anticancer type of medication called a kinase inhibitor. It works by interfering with the action of certain proteins to help prevent cancer cells from multiplying and stop the spread of cancer cells. It can be used to treat certain types of cancer such as leukemia, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, and dermamtofibrosarcoma protuberans when the tumor cannot be removed surgically, has spread to other parts of the body or has come back after surgery.
How is Imatib used?
Imatib is usually taken once or twice per day or as directed by a doctor. The tablets should be taken with a meal along with a full glass of water. For patients who cannot swallow the tablet whole, it may be dissolved in a glass of water or apple juice to be taken as a liquid. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition, weight and response to the medication.
Adverse effects
Patients using Imatib may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Upset stomach
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Headaches
- Joint pain
- Fatigue
- Constipation
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Irregular heartbeat
- Easy bruising or bleeding
- Unexplained weight gain
- Oedema
- Shortness of breath
- Insomnia
- Jaundice
- Signs of infection
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Imatib is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
