What is Imigran?
Imigran containing the active ingredient sumatriptan is a selective serotonin receptor agonist, commonly known as a triptan type of medication. It works by narrowing blood vessels around the brain and reducing pain signals from being sent to the brain. It can be used to treat symptoms of migraine headaches such as nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light or sound. The medication cannot be used to prevent or decrease the amount of future migraine headaches.
How is Imigran used?
Imigran should be taken at the first sign of a migraine headache or if the attack has already begun. The tablets should be taken with a full glass of water but can be taken with or without food. Dosage will depend on the patient's condition and their response to the therapy, contact a doctor for the correct dosage. If the migraine headache returns another dose may be taken after 2 hours or as directed by a doctor. The recommended maximum dosage is 200mg in a 24 hour period.
Adverse effects
Patients using Imigran may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Heavy feeling in the body
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Drooling
- Flushing
- Tingling feeling
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Seizures
- Chest pain
- Irregular heartbeat
- Vision changes
- Tremors
- Weakness on one side of the body
- Confusion
- Bloody diarrhea
Warnings
The medication should not be used to treat a common tension headache.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Imigran is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
