What is Imigran?
Imigran works by narrowing blood vessels around the brain and reducing pain signals from being sent to the brain. The active ingredient sumatriptan is considered a selective serotonin receptor agonist also commonly known as a triptan type of medication. It can be used to treat symptoms of migraine headaches such as vomiting, nausea and sensitivity to sound or light. The medication cannot be used to prevent or decrease the amount of future migraine headaches.
How is Imigran used?
Imigran should be taken as soon as you can sense a migraine or if the attack has already begun. The tablets can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their reaction to the medication. If the migraine returns after the initial dose, a second dose may be administered after 2 hours or as directed by a doctor. The recommended maximum dosage is 200mg in a 24 hour period.
Adverse effects
Imigran may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Tingling feeling
- Flushing
- Drooling
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
- Heavy feeling in the body
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Bloody diarrhea
- Confusion
- Weakness on one side of the body
- Tremors
- Vision changes
- Irregular heartbeat
- Chest pain
- Seizures
Warnings
The medication should not be used to treat a common tension headache.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Imigran is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
