What is Imodium?
Imodium containing the active ingredient loperamide hydrochloride is considered an antimotility type of medication. It is used to treat acute diarrhea and diarrhea associated with irritable bowel syndrome. It works by slowing the rhythm of digestion so the small intestines have more time to absorb fluid and nutrients from food. The capsule is used to treat diarrhea but cannot be used to treat the cause of the diarrhea.
How is Imodium used?
Imodium should be taken at the first sign of diarrhea or as directed by a doctor. The capsules should be taken with a full glass of water. Diarrhea can also cause dehydration, it is recommended to drink plenty of water or other beverages while taking the medication. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient's condition and their response to the medication. The recommended maximum dosage is 8mg every 24 hours.

Patients taking Imodium may encounter unwanted side effects such as:

- Constipation
- Dry mouth
- Vomiting
- Difficulty breathing
- Bloating

Warnings
The medication should not be used in children under 6 years of age unless directed by a doctor.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Imodium is not always suitable for all patients.
