What is Klacid?
Klacid containing the active ingredient clarithromycine is considered a macrolide antibiotic type of medication. It works by preventing the creation of proteins that are needed for bacteria to replicate and increase in numbers. The medication does not directly kill the bacteria but leaves them unable to increase in numbers and allowing the immune system to kill the bacteria and treat infections. It is used to treat certain bacterial infections such as pneumonia, bronchitis, skin and respiratory infections. It cannot be used to treat viral infections such as the common cold or flu.
How is Klacid used?
Klacid is usually taken orally twice daily or as directed by a doctor. To prevent an upset stomach the tablets should be taken with some food along with a glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and duration of therapy as it will depend on the patient's condition and their reaction to the medication. Do not discontinue the medication until the prescribed cycle is complete as stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow and result in a relapse of the infection.
