What is Lamictal Dc?
Lamictal Dc works by decreasing abnormal electrical activity in the brain to treat seizures in patients who suffer from epilepsy or Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. The active ingredient lamotrigine is considered an anticonvulsant type of medication. Some patients may also use the tablets in combination with other medications to increase the time between episodes of mania, depression and other abnormal moods in patients with bipolar disorder.
How is Lamictal Dc used?
Lamictal Dc should be used as directed by a doctor, usually once or twice daily. The tablets should be taken orally and can be taken with or without food. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the condition being treated, the patient's weight and their response to the medication. To avoid the bitter taste of the medication, it is advised to swallow the tablet whole and not crushed, chewed and cut. Do not discontinue the medication without consulting a doctor as abruptly stopping the treatment may cause a relapse in the patient's condition.
Adverse effects
Lamictal Dc may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Loss of coordination
- Fatigue
- Tremors
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Headaches
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Insomnia
- Increased sensitivity to light
- Muscle pain
- Mental or mood problems
- Suicidal thoughts
- Chest pain
- More severe seizures than before
- Vision problems
Warnings
The medication may cause a severe or life threatening skin rash, especially in children who take too high of a dose at the start of treatment.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Lamictal Dc is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
