What is Lamictal Dc?
Lamictal Dc belongs to a group of medication called anticonvulsants. The active ingredient lamotrigine works by decreasing abnormal electrical activity in the brain to treat seizures in patients who suffer from epilepsy or Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Some patients may also use the tablets alone or in combination with other medications to increase the time between episodes of depression, mania and other abnormal moods in patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
How is Lamictal Dc used?
Lamictal Dc can be taken orally with or without food but should be taken with some fluids. The tablets should be taken as directed by a doctor, usually once or twice daily. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient's weight, the condition being treated and their response to the medication. If you are taking the orally disintegrating tablet, place the tablet on the tongue and move it around the mouth. Allow it to dissolve without chewing and swallow several times as the tablet dissolves. If desired drink liquid to help swallow the dissolved tablet. Do not discontinue the medication without consulting a doctor as abruptly stopping the treatment may cause a relapse in the patient's condition.
Adverse effects
Lamictal Dc may lead to unwanted side effects such as:
- Vomiting
- Upset stomach
- Nausea
- Tremors
- Headaches
- Fatigue
- Drowsiness
- Blurred or double vision
- Dizziness
- Loss of coordination
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Mental or mood problems
- Stiff neck
- Suicidal thoughts
- Muscle pain
- Chest pain
- Increased sensitivity to light
- More severe seizures than before
- Insomnia
Warnings
The medication may cause a severe or life threatening skin rash, especially in children who take too high of a dose at the start of treatment.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Lamictal Dc is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
