What is Lamictal Dc?
Lamictal Dc containing the active ingredient lamotrigine works by decreasing abnormal electrical activity in the brain to treat seizures in patients who suffer from Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and epilepsy. The medication is considered an anticonvulsant type of medication. It can be used alone or with other medications to increase the time between episodes of mania, depression and other abnormal moods in patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
How is Lamictal Dc used?
Lamictal Dc is usually taken orally once or twice daily and can be taken with or without food. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s response to the medication, the condition being treated and their body weight. If you are taking the chewable dispersble tablet, you can either swallow it whole with a glass of water or chew the tablet and then swallow it. It may also be placed into 1 teaspoon of water or diluted juice and allowed to disperse in the liquid before gently swirling the liquid and drinking the mixture right away. The doctor may start you on a low dose and gradually increase dosage to the optimal amount. Do not discontinue the medication without consulting a doctor as abruptly stopping the treatment may cause a relapse in the patient’s condition.
Adverse effects
Patients using Lamictal Dc may encounter side effects such as:
- Headaches
- Fatigue
- Tremors
- Drowsiness
- Nausea
- Blurred or double vision
- Upset stomach
- Dizziness
- Vomiting
- Loss of coordination
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Chest pain
- Muscle pain
- Increased sensitivity to light
- Suicidal thoughts
- More severe seizures than before
- Stiff neck
- Insomnia
- Mental or mood problems
Warnings
The medication may cause a severe or life threatening skin rash, especially in children who take too high of a dose at the start of treatment.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Lamictal Dc is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
