What is Lasix?
Lasix containing the active ingredient frusemide is considered a water pill or loop diuretics type of medication. The medication can help prevent swelling and fluid retention (edema) caused by conditions such as heart failure, liver disease and kidney disorders by passing excess salt and water through urine. Some people may also use the drug to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) which can help reduce the risk of strokes, heart attacks and kidney problems.
How is Lasix used?
Lasix is usually taken orally 1 to 2 times per day or as directed by a doctor. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with plenty of water throughout the duration of treatment. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the therapy. It is recommended to avoid consuming the tablets at least 4 hours prior to bedtime to prevent having to wake up in the middle of the night to urinate. Do not discontinue the medication without consulting the doctor, even if you feel well, as hypertension usually has no visible symptoms.
