What is Lenalid?
Lenalid can affect the way the immune system works to help the bone marrow produce normal blood cells while killing abnormal cells in the bone marrow. The active ingredient lenalidomide is considered an immunomodulating agent. The capsules can be used alone or in combination with other medication to treat multiple myeloma or anemia associated with myelodysplastic syndromes.
How is Lenalid used?
Lenalid should be taken as directed by a doctor, usually in a 28 day cycle, taking the medication once daily. It should be taken with a full glass of water but can be taken with or without food. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient's condition and their response to the medication. The capsules should be swallowed whole and not opened, broken, crushed or chewed.
Adverse effects
Lenalid may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Loss of appetite and weight loss
- Fatigue
- Headaches
- Vomiting
- Stomach pain
- Constipation
- Dizziness
- Diarrhea
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Painful urination
- Muscle spasms
- Blurred vision
- Change in taste
- Irregular heartbeat
- Shortness of breath
- Jaundice
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Lenalid is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
