What is Lenalid?
Lenalid can be used alone or in combination with other medication to treat anemia associated with myelodysplastic syndromes and multiple myeloma. The active ingredient lenalidomide is considered an immunomodulating agent. The medication affects the way the immune system works to help produce normal blood cells while killing abnormal cells in the bone marrow.
How is Lenalid used?
Lenalid is usually taken in a 28 day cycle, taking the medication once daily or as directed by a doctor. The capsules can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their reaction to the medication. The capsules should be taken whole and not broken, crushed, chewed or opened.
Adverse effects
Lenalid may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Vomiting
- Stomach pain
- Headaches
- Constipation
- Fatigue
- Dizziness
- Loss of appetite and weight loss
- Diairrhea
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Change in taste
- Blurred vision
- Irregular heartbeat
- Muscle spasms
- Shortness of breath
- Painful urination
- Jaundice
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Lenalid is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
