What is Levocrine?
Levocrine is a chewable tablet for dogs containing levothyroxine sodium (L-Thyroxine). Levocrine is used as a treatment for dogs with low thyroid hormones (hypothyroidism).
How is Levocrine used?
Levocrine is usually started at a dosage of 0.1mg (100mcg) per 10lb (4.5kg) of body weight, twice daily. With the help of regular blood tests, your vet will then change the dosage as necessary to achieve a maintenance dose (usually a similar dosage to the starting dose, but taken only once per day).
Levocrine can be put into your dog's food or administered orally on its own.
Adverse effects
Levocrine has no reported adverse reactions or side effects when it is taken at a suitable dosage. If your dog is experiencing side effects such as polydipsia, polyuria, polyphagia, reduced heat tolerance and hyperactivity or personality change this may be a sign that the current dosage is too high.
Warnings
Levocrine is contraindicated in dogs with thyrotoxicosis, acute myocardial infarction or uncorrected adrenal insufficiency. If your dog is pregnant, discuss the safety of this treatment with your vet. Levothyroxine sodium must be used with caution in dogs with heart disease or hypertension. |
