What is Levocrine?
Levocrine is levothyroxine sodium (L-Thyroxine) in a chewable tablet form. Levocrine treats hypothyroidism in dogs by replacing the thyroid hormones that are not being adequately produced.
How is Levocrine used?
Dosages will be prescribed and monitored by your vet. Usual dosages are:
- Starting Dosage: 0.1mg (100mcg) per 10lb (4.5kg) of the dog's body weight twice daily.
- Maintenance Dosage: 0.1mg (100mcg) per 10lb (4.5 kg) of the dog's body weight once daily.
Levocrine is a chewable tablet that may be combined with the dog's food or administered orally on its own.
Adverse effects
When levothyroxine sodium is taken at correct dosages, there are no reported side effects. If the dosage is too high, there may be some signs of thyrotoxicosis including polydipsia, polyuria, polyphagia, reduced heat tolerance and hyperactivity or personality change.
Warnings
Thyrotoxicosis, acute myocardial infarction or uncorrected adrenal insufficiency: do not treat dogs with any of these conditions with levothyroxine sodium.
Pregnancy: safety of levothyroxine sodium in pregnant dogs has yest to be evaluated. Your vet will explain if they think it is safe to treat your dog with Levocrine while pregnant.
Dogs with heart disease or hypertension. should be monitored closely while taking levothyroxine sodium. |
