What is Levocrine?
Levocrine is used to treat dogs suffering from hypothyroidism (a conditions where the thyroid doesn't product enough T3 and T4 hormones). Each chewable tablet contains 1mg (1000mcg) of levothyroxine sodium (L-Thyroxine).
How is Levocrine used?
Levocrine dosage is dependant on the weight of the dog and the severity of the condition. In most cases, a starting dosage of 0.1mg (100mcg) per 10lb (4.5kg) of the dog's body weight twice a day is prescribed. During treatment, the vet will check the dog's blood for hormone levels. This will allow the dosage to be adjusted accordingly until a maintenance dosage is reached. This is usually a similar dosage to the starting dosage, but taken just once a day.
Levocrine chewable tablets can be given to the dog directly into it's mouth, or combined with the dog's food.
Adverse effects
Most side effects associated with Levocrine are actually signs of overdosage. If your dog exhibits polydipsia, polyuria, polyphagia, reduced heat tolerance and hyperactivity or personality change, talk to your vet about possibly reducing the dosage.
Warnings
Not all dogs can take levothyroxine sodium. Dogs with thyrotoxicosis, acute myocardial infarction or uncorrected adrenal insufficiency, must not be given levothyroxine sodium. Treatment of pregnant dogs with Levocrine may not be safe. If your dog has heart disease or hypertension, caution should be exercised when giving levothyroxine sodium. |
