What is Levocrine?
Levocrine (levothyroxine sodium or sometimes called L-Thyroxine) is a treatment indicated in dogs with hypothyroidism. This is a condition where the thyroid is no longer producing enough thyroid hormones. Levocrine provides thyroid replacement therapy in all conditions of inadequate production of thyroid hormones.
How is Levocrine used?
Dogs are usually started at a dosage of 0.1mg (100mcg) per 10lb (4.5kg) of the dog's body weight. This dosage should be taken twice daily. The starting dosage may be different depending on the state of hypothyroidism. During treatment, blood hormone levels should be checked and dosage adjusted until a maintenance dosage is reached. This is usually 0.1mg per 10lb (4.5 kg) of body weight once a day.
These chewable tablets can be given to the dog orally, or can be combined with the dog's food.
Adverse effects
Levocrine has no reported adverse reactions or side effects at correct dosages. Signs of overdosage may include polydipsia, polyuria, polyphagia, reduced heat tolerance and hyperactivity or personality change. Tell your vet if you notice any of these.
Warnings
In dogs with thyrotoxicosis, acute myocardial infarction or uncorrected adrenal insufficiency, levothyroxine sodium is contraindicated and should not be given. Levothyroxine sodium's effect on pregnant dogs has not been measured. Use levothyroxine sodium with caution in dogs with heart disease or hypertension.
