What is Levocrine?
Hypothyroidism is a condition that is common in dogs, particularly in middle-age dogs of medium to large breeds. Hypothyroidism is a condition where the thyroid does not produce sufficient levels of hormones. Levocrine (levothyroxine sodium or L-Thyroxine) can treat dogs with hypothyroidism by replacing some of these hormones.
How is Levocrine used?
The recommended starting dosage of levocrine is 0.1mg (100mcg) per 10lb (4.5kg) of the dog's body weight, taken every 12 hours. Careful monitoring including blood tests will then be needed to find a correct maintenance dosage.
Levocrine are chewable tablets that can be chewed and swallowed alone, or combined with the dog's food.
Adverse effects
When taken at a suitable dosage, levothyroxine sodium has no reported negative side effects. In cases of overdosage, signs and symptoms of thyrotoxicosis may occur. These include polydipsia, polyuria, polyphagia, reduced heat tolerance and hyperactivity or personality change. Contact your vet if you notice any of these in your dog.
Warnings
Levocrine is contraindicated in dogs with thyrotoxicosis, acute myocardial infarction or uncorrected adrenal insufficiency. Use levothyroxine sodium with caution in pregnant dogs, or dogs with heart disease or hypertension.
