What is Licab?
Licab with the active ingredient lithium carbonate is a mood stabilizing agent. It restores the balance of certain chemicals in the brain to reduce extremes in behavior. It is used to treat many neurological conditions such as mania, bipolar disorder, recurrent signs of depression and can decrease the intensity and frequency of mood swings.
How is Licab used?
Licab is an orally administered medication that is usually taken 3 to 4 times per day. To prevent having an upset stomach it should be taken with a meal along with a full glass of water. Dosage will depend on the condition and reaction of the patient, contact a doctor for the correct dosage. As the medication may cause excess sweating, vomiting or diarrhea, it is advised to drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration. To maximize the effects of the medication, it is advised to maintain a steady salt intake to avoid any changes in your lithium level.
Adverse effects
Patients taking Licab may encounter side effects such as:

- Reduced coordination
- Tremors
- Fatigue
- Loss of appetite
- Weight gain
- Increased frequency of urination

- Extreme thirst
- Fever
- Muscle weakness
- Memory loss
- Convulsions
- Vision changes
Warnings
It is not recommended to take the medication along with any ACE inhibitors as it may increase the level of lithium in the body to cause an increased risk of side effects or toxicity.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Licab is not always suitable for all patients.
