What is Lipex?
Lipex containing the active ingredient simvastatin belongs to a class of medications called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins). The medication works by slowing the production of cholesterol in the body to decrease the amount of cholesterol that may build up on the walls of the arteries and block flow to the heart, brain and other parts of the body. It can be used alone or along with other medications to lower “bad” cholesterol (low density lipoprotein, LDL) and triglycerides while at the same time increase the amount of “good” cholesterol (high density lipoprotein, HDL) in the blood. Controlling high cholesterol levels can help lower the risk of heart attacks, strokes and other heart complications.
How is Lipex used?
Lipex is usually taken orally once per day in the evening or as directed by a doctor. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient's condition and their response to the therapy. The recommended maximum dosage for a 24 hour period is 40mg. It is recommended to avoid consuming grapefruits and grapefruit juice as it may alter the amount of the drug in the bloodstream.
Adverse effects
Patients using Lipex may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Headaches
- Stomach pain
- Nausea
- Joint and muscle pain
- Sleep disturbances
- Dizziness
- Constipation
- Cold like symptoms
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Jaundice
- Change in the amount of urine
- Confusion
- Memory problems
- Pain or burning during urination
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Decreased sex drive or performance
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Lipex is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
