What is Lithium Carbonate?
Lithium Carbonate is a compound of lithium, carbon and oxygen and is used as a mood stabilizing agent. It can be used to treat and control neurological conditions such as recurrent signs of depression, bipolar disorder, mania and can decrease the intensity and frequency of mood swings. It reduces extremes in behavior by restoring the balance of certain chemicals in the brain.
How is Lithium Carbonate used?
Lithium Carbonate is a medication taken orally and should be taken with a meal to avoid an upset stomach. It is usually taken 3 to 4 times a day with the correct dosage to be determined by a doctor as it will depend on the patient’s condition and reaction to the medication. It is advised to drink plenty of water when taking the medication as it may lead to diarrhea, vomiting or excess sweating and cause dehydration. To avoid any change in your lithium level it is advised to maintain a steady salt intake in your diet.
Adverse effects
Lithium Carbonate may cause side effects such as:
- Increased frequency of urination
- Weight gain
- Loss of appetite
- Fatigue
- Tremors
- Reduced coordination
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Vision changes
- Convulsions
- Memory problems
- Muscle weakness
- Fever
- Extreme thirst
Warnings
To decrease the risk of side effects or toxicity, it is not recommended to consume the medication along with any ACE inhibitors.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Lithium Carbonate is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
