What is Locoid Crelo?
Locoid Crelo containing the active ingredient hydrocortisone butyrate is considered a potent topical corticosteroid type of medication. The medication works by preventing the release of certain substances in the body that cause inflammation to reduce swelling redness and itching. It can be used to treat skin conditions caused by eczema, insect bites, poison ivy, soaps detergents, cosmetics and jewelry. It can also be used to treat itchy anal and rectal areas, itching and irritation of the scalp and to relieve discomfort of mouth sores.
How is Locoid Crelo used?
Locoid Crelo should be applied topically 1 to 4 times per day or as directed by a doctor. Prior to applying the cream, wash and dry your hands and the affected area. Apply a thin layer of the medication to the affected area and gently massage it in. Do not bandage or apply any dressing to the treated area unless otherwise told to do so by a doctor. Wash your hands immediately after applying the cream unless the hands are the affected area. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the therapy.
Adverse effects
Patients using Locoid Crelo may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Stinging, burning, irritation or redness at application site
- Stretch marks
- Drying or cracking of skin
- Skin discoloration
- Spidery blood vessels
- Unusual hair growth
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Skin infections
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
Never apply the medication to broken or damaged skin to avoid undesired side effects or symptoms .
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Locoid Crelo is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
