What is Losartan?
Losartan belongs to a class of medications called angiotensin II receptor antagonists and is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). The medication works by blocking certain natural substances to relax the blood vessels and reduce the work rate required by the heart to pump blood through the body. Regulating blood pressure levels can ensure a healthier heart and prevent the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and are also suffering from high blood pressure may also use the tablets as a long term treatment of kidney damage.
How is Losartan used?
Losartan is an orally administered medication taken once per day unless otherwise directed by a doctor. The tablets can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a glass of water. Dosage and length of treatment will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy, contact a doctor for the correct dosage. It may take between 3 to 6 weeks of regular treatment before your blood pressure is under control. Do not discontinue the medication without consulting a doctor, even if you feel better, as hypertension usually has no visible symptoms.
