What is Losec?
Losec can help decrease the amount of stomach acid being produced in the body. The active ingredient omeprazole belongs to a class of medications called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). The medication can help relieve symptoms such as persistent coughing, difficulty swallowing and heartburn caused by Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other conditions caused by excess stomach acid. It can also be used to treat ulcers and promoting healing of the stomach and intestines.
How is Losec used?
Losec should be taken orally as directed by a doctor, usually 1 to 2 times per day. The medication should be taken with a full glass of water 1 hour prior to the same meal each day. Contact a doctor for the correct length of treatment and dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. The capsules should be swallowed whole and not crushed, chewed, broken or split before consuming.
Adverse effects
Losec may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Dizziness
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Abdominal pain
- Headaches
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Muscle spasms
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Seizures
- Irregular heartbeat
- Insomnia
- Blurred vision
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Losec is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
