What is Losec?
Losec containing the active ingredient omeprazole magnesium belongs to a class of medications called proton pump inhibitors. The medication works by decreasing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It can be used to treat certain stomach and esophagus problems such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and relieve symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing and persistent cough. Some people may also use it to treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and promote healing of damage to your esophagus caused by stomach acid.
How is Losec used?
Losec is usually taken once per day or as directed by a doctor. The medication should be taken with or just after a meal along with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. The capsules should be taken whole and not chewed, crushed or split before consuming.
Adverse effects
Patients using Losec may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Headaches
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Excessive gas
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Irregular heartbeat
- Muscle weakness, cramps or spasms
- Seizures
- Signs of infection
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Losec is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
