What is Losec?
Losec containing the active ingredient omeprazole is considered a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) type of medication. The medication works by decreasing the amount of acid being produced in the stomach. It can help relieve symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing and persistent coughing caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and other conditions caused by excess stomach acid. The capsules can also be used to promote healing of the stomach or intestine caused by ulcers.
How is Losec used?
Losec is usually taken orally 1 to 2 times daily or as directed by a doctor. The medication should be taken 1 hour before the same meal each day along with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the therapy. The capsules should be swallowed whole and not chewed, crushed, split or broken before consuming.
Adverse effects
Patients using Losec may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Headaches
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Dizziness
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Blurred vision
- Insomnia
- Irregular heartbeat
- Seizures
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Muscle spasms
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Losec is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
