What is Lovir?
Lovir containing the active ingredient aciclovir is an antiviral medicine used to treat infections associated with the herpes viruses. It works by slowing the growth and spread of the herpes virus and allowing the immune system to fight off the infection. The tablets can be used to treat cold sores, shingles and chickenpox. Some patients may also use it to treat genital herpes and prevent genital herpes in patients who are affected with the virus. The medication is not a cure for herpes and will not stop the spread of the virus to others.
How is Lovir used?
Lovir is usually taken orally 2 to 5 times per day at the first sign of an outbreak or as directed by a doctor. Take the tablets with some food and plenty of water to prevent an upset stomach. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the medication. Complete the full course of the prescribed medication even if you feel better as discontinuing the treatment too soon may cause the infection to return and more difficult to treat.
