What is Lovir?
Lovir containing the active ingredient aciclovir is considered a guanosine analogue antiviral type of medication. The medication works by preventing viruses from multiplying and spreading to reduce the severity of infections. It can be used to treat cold sores around the mouth caused by herpes simplex, shingles caused by herpes zoster and chickenpox. Some people may also use the tablets to treat and prevent outbreaks of genital herpes in people with frequent outbreaks.
How is Lovir used?
Lovir is usually taken orally 2 to 5 times per day for 5 to 10 days or as directed by a doctor. The tablets can be taken with or without food but should be taken with plenty of water throughout the treatment. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. Do not discontinue the medication without completing the prescribed cycle, even if symptoms look healed, as abruptly stopping the treatment may cause the infection to return and become more difficult to treat.
Adverse effects
Patients using Lovir may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Nausea
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Stomach pain
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Excessive fatigue
- Fever
- Hair loss
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Jaundice
- Mental or mood changes
- Vision problems
Warnings
The medication can be used to treat viral infections but cannot be used to cure the conditions.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Lovir is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
