What is Lovir?
Lovir works by preventing viruses from multiplying and spreading to reduce the severity of infections. The active ingredient aciclovir belongs to a class of medications called guanosine analogue antivirals. The medication can be used to treat chicken pox, shingles caused by herpes zoster and cold sores around the mouth caused by herpes simplex. Some patients may also use the tablets to prevent and treat genital herpes outbreaks in people with frequent outbreaks.
How is Lovir used?
Lovir should only be used as directed by a doctor, usually 2 to 5 times per day for 5 to 10 days. The tablets should be taken with plenty of water throughout the treatment but can be taken with or without food. Contact a doctor for the correct length of treatment and dosage as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient's response to the therap. Continue to take the medication until the fully prescribed amount is completed, even if symptoms look healed, as abruptly stopping the treatment may cause the infection to return and become more difficult to treat.
